Hi Everyone,
I am in the second week of the new job and everything is going well so far. I have found 39 cents since the last update. This came in the form of 3 dimes and 9 pennies. 38 cents was found on the ground at Quick Check, Home Depot, Ice skating rink, super market and today in the parking lot near work. The remaining penny was given to me as extra change in the cafeteria at work. Change due was fourteen cents, cashier gave a dime and a nickle to make it easier.

Step - 9 Update: My Biggest Find So Far
Hi Everyone,
It is a beautiful, sunny, warm day here in NJ and things are starting to come together for me. I received a message earlier that I have gotten the second job I applied to, so that means more money coming in. This is much needed as I had to dip into my savings while I was out of work in order to pay the bills.
I also found my biggest doubling find so far while I was out at lunch. I found 36 cents near a bench outside the mall near to where I am working. I have added it to my stake.
I am starting to get excited as pretty soon there will be enough stake money available to purhase something to re-sell. Which means I will not have to rely soley on finding change on the ground.
To summarize:
Current Step: 9
Total Stake: $1.67 Total Surplus: $.22
Amount required to complete step $.89
Anyway, I hope all of your doubling efforts are going well!!

Step - 8 Completed
Hi Everyone,
I know it has been a while. As I had previously mentioned I was focusing all my time on searching for a job. Well the effort has paid off. I found a job and since finding it I have interviewed for another job (more money) and I am expecting to get the second job soon.
Although I did not have time to post about it, I was still keeping my head down as I was out and about. I managed to find 12 cents during this time. Most was found at, you guessed it, the local Quick Check, I also found some at the supermarket, the mall by my new job, and the ice skating rink where my daughter skates. I found these 1 penny at a time. This brings me through Step 8 and into Step 9 with a total stake of $1.31.
To summarize:
Current Step: 9
Total Stake: $1.31 Total Surplus: $.22
Amount required to complete step $1.25

Web 2.0 Explained
Hi Everyone,
As promised in the "Step 8 Update #4" post, I am going to give you a link to what I think is a good explanation of Web 2.0.
If you are going to try to use internet marketing as part of your doubling process you will need to understand Web 2.0 and how to use various Web 2.0 properties to help drive traffic to your affiliate offers, web pages, etc.
There is also some additional information that I am reviewing, and will be providing to you if I think it is useful. I am toying with the idea of setting up a mailing list/autoresponder type set up for this blog, once i figure out how to do so. So future freebies like this will most likely require signing up to the mailing list.
I will be doing this mostly as an experiment in how to monetize a blog. I have thought long and hard about whether or not I should monetize this blog. I had mixed feelings about it as the theme is about making money for free. However, if you really think about doubling, the initial money is found for free and then you buy something with the stake to re-sell at a profit etc. So based on that I will be making some changes in the future to monetize this blog.
I do however promise to be up front with you about any "monetized items". I will:
1. Let you know in advance about any changes/additions to this blog.
2. Let you know when a link is an affiliate link.
3. Only have affiliate links to products that I think will be helpful to you in your doubling efforts.
4. Provide free alternatives to any recommended products (if there are any available)
5. Not require you to purchase anything from me ever
Hope my decision to monetize does not offend any of you. I value and appreciate all of you that take the time to read this blog. And I promise to still provide all information to you for free as always.
Anyway, thanks for sticking with me and here is the link as promised. This is not an affiliate link.

Hope you enjoy and learn something from these videos. Let me know what you think of them.

Step - 8 Update #5
Hi Everyone
Sorry it has been a while since my last post. As I mentioned before I have been out of work for almost 3 months. Money is starting to get tight and therefore, all of my time recently has been spent on searching for the next job.
The good news is that all of this searching has finally paid off and if everything goes well I will be back to work on Monday. The bad news is that (I am a consultant) and the rate is not as much as I usually receive so money will still be a little tight but it is better than nothing.
Anyway since my last post I found an additional six cents at you guessed it the local Quick Check. I found 4 cents on Friday, another on Saturday, and the last one yesterday. As Tony Saprano would say "boy that Quick Check is a good earner Badda Bing".
To summarize:
Current Step: 8
Total Stake: $1.19 Total Surplus: $.22
Amount required to complete step $.09

Step - 8 Update #2
Hi Everyone,
I had a pretty good run the last couple of days. On Wednesday I found a penny when checking out at the local Quick Check and when returining to the car I found a dime in the parking lot. After that I had to go to Walmart to get some oil for the car. I decided to give a quick scan of the store since I was having such good doubling luck. I looked down and found a quarter on the floor and a little bit past that was a nickle. Just for good luck I gave a quick scan of the parking lot when returning to the car and found another two cents. So that makes 43 cents for Wednesday.
Yesterday I found a penny on the ground while at the store with my wife. Added to the 43 cents found on Wednesday, that makes 44 cents added to the stake.
To summarize:
Current Step: 8
Total Stake: $1.09 Total Surplus: $.22
Amount required to complete step $.19

Monetize Your Blog - Progress Update
Hi Everyone,
In my February 11 post (view it here), I mentioned that I was setting up a blog to monetize with Google adsense, based on some instructions contained in some free videos I found. This is the first update on my progress.
Well it was easy enough to set up the blog and monetize it with adsense. I followed the instructions from the videos which basically state to search Google hot trends and publish posts to your blog about the hottest trends, then you put this information on sites like Digg and Propeller. In theory this should drive viewers to your blog and hopefully some of them will click on the ads.
This worked pretty well and there were definitely people viewing the blog however I did not get any clicks on the ads. In looking at the ads Google placed on the blog I noticed that many of them did not have much to do with the content of the blog. I feel that this is the primary reason that there were no clicks. Another reason is that the blog covered to broad a range of topics.
So what am I going to do about it you ask?? I have a background in quality management and have decided to apply quality management (QM) principles to my approach. One of the primary methodologies applied in QM is the Shewhart Cycle, also known as the Demming Wheel. You can find more information about it here .
Basically it is the cycle of PDCA which stands for PLAN => DO => CHECK => ACT
I had the initial plan which was to set up and monetize the blog.
I did it.
I checked it and noticed that although I was getting visitors I was not getting clicks on the ads.
So that brings me to the act portion of the cycle.
The actions that I am going to take are:
• set up a new blog that has a narrower topic
• pick a topic that people are passionate about and therefore have a reason to view it and click on associated ads
• find out how to select the ads myself rather than have google select the ads in order to ensure that the ads are relavent to the blog topic
Hopefully I will see some better results after the changes have been made. This brings the cycle back to the beginning and you PDCA all over again. I will run this set up for a month and then report back on the progress.
If anyone wants more specifics please leave a comment and I will get back to you. Also, if any of you have attempted a similar approach I would love to hear how you made out.

Step - 7 Update #5
Hi Everyone,
I am still focusing on my job search and that is why I have not been posting as frequently as I had been. Anyway the search is going slow. I did get a commitment for a second interview with one of the opportunities.
One of the problems I am having is that many of the opportunities require online resume submission. You never know if anyone even sees your resume in this process. I can't help but feeling that if I could speak to an actual person I would be able to get my foot in the door.
If any of you have been in this situation and have any tricks or suggestions as to how to get to a live person please leave a comment and let me know. It would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!!!!!
Anyway, on to the update. I found a penny by the self check out at the Quick Check this morning. Gotta love the self check out lines, there always seems to be change on the floor close to them. I added this to the stake for Step 7.
To summarize:

What I have been up to.
Hi Everyone,
Have not found anything to add to the stake since the last update. As discussed I have been wading through some of the free internet marketing info I have received looking for the nuggets of valuable info. I came across some instructional videos describing how to easily set up a blog, monetize it with adsense, and drive some traffic to it. I have set one up as a test to see if it works. I will not tell you what it is just yet as I want to see if traffic will get there on its own. So far it is getting page impressions but no clicks on the adds. I am going to give it some time and then report back to you. If it works I will summarize the technique so you can try it out yourselves.
The second thing I have been up to is looking for a job. As I previously mentioned I am out of work and I really need to put most of my energy into finding the next job. This brings me back to the "Off Kilter" project I mentioned a while back.
I will be setting up another blog to serve as the "hub" for my off kilter project. In a nutshell I have realized that most of my big accomplishments in life happened when I was focused on that one item. The rest of my life was somewhat out of balance during these times, hence the name "Off Kilter".
This got me thinking that all this talk about balancing your life doesn't work for me. I am thinking maybe it doesn't work for some of you either.
So long story short the "Off Kilter" project will be a list of the things I go out of balance to achieve. Doubling will be a subset of the project.
Finally the last thing I have been doing is digging out of the snow. We have had over a foot here.
Anyway, enough rambling for one post.

Hi Everyone,
Its been a busy wekend and I am finally gettting a few minutes to post. On Friday I found 2 cents at the Quick Check, then yesterday I found a penny at the ice skating rink while at practice with my daughter, and last but not least I found a penny in the supermarket today while picking up last minute snacks for the game.
I don't really care who wins the game, as all our local teams did not make it. However, I have a weird feeling that the Saints are going to win. I don't know why. Anyway, I am going to watch the rest of the game. All of you football fans out there ENJOY!!!

Hi Everyone,
Yesterday was music lesson day for my kids. When we got there I could not find a parking spot. I had to park all the way down the street.
When I stepped out of the car I noticed something shiny sticking out from under a small pile of snow. I went over to check it out. It was a nickle.
Therefore, I added 4 cents to my stake to complete Step 6 and (in keeping with the rules) the remaining cent was added to the surplus.

Is Any Of This For Real - Part One
Hi Everyone,
A few posts back I mentioned my realization that finding money on the ground would probably not take me past the first steps of the double your way to a million process.
Therefore, I decided to start to look at additional ways to add to my stake. I decided to check out the different ways to make money online. There are a number of these. Actually there are so many that it can become overwhelming.
There are tons of e-courses etc.(some seem like total scams) if you want to get more information. I decided that this blog would be a good platform to try some of these methods and see if they are for real. But how to do them with out using up all of my small stake was the question.
So in keeping with the spirit of doing things for free I decided to see if any of this info could be obtained without paying for it. The short answer is yes. Many of the folks selling stuff will send you free information to entice you to buy their latest product. What this means is that you can get some of the older courses, videos, etc. for free.
If you would like to follow along with me and try to duplicate what I am trying, you will need an e-mail account that the free items can be sent to. I would suggest setting up a separate account (gmail would be perfect for this), as once you start your inbox will soon become flooded with information. If you do not know how to set up a gmail account click here.
Please note that many of the items you will be sent will be teasers to get you to buy something. However, I have started to do this and if you have the patience to sift through everything you will find some tidbits of useful information here and there. I am going to stop here before this post gets too long.
So to recap the first step is to set up a gmail account (click the link above if you don't know how). In the next installment of "Is Any Of This For Real" I will tell you how to find the free information.

Another Doubling Friend
Hi Everyone,
We had a bit of snow here in NJ today. My kids were thrilled as school opening was delayed by 2 hours.
Anyway, I was out and about but have not come across any additional money to add to my stake. Therefore, I was quite happy when I logged into my blog and noticed I had another follower.
Welcome aboard Gritech!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, I've got to get the kids to dancing and ice skating. Hopefully I will add to my stake while I am out.

Step 6 Update
Hi Everyone,
I just got back in from driving my kids to dance lessons and wrestling practice. While I was out I decided to stop into the supermarket to pick up something for dinner (yes we end up eating dinner late as we don't get to eat until everyone returns from their activities).
Two good things happened at the supermarket.
First off, I ran into an old friend from a former job. He happens to work with the type of systems I need to brush up on for an upcoming job interview. He said he would give me a crash course on the system prior to my interview.
Second, I found a dime on the floor when checking out. This means six more cents to go until I complete Step 6.
To summarize:
Current Step: 6
Total Stake: $.26 Total Surplus: $.12
Amount required to complete step $.06

This Thought Just Popped Into My Head
Hi Everyone,
As I was completeing the last post something occurred to me. When I first started this I didn't expect to find much. Maybe this was because the rules tell you to find a penny. After the first step I kept finding pennies.
Then at the end of Step 4 I found a dime. I think my mindset/expectation changed a bit after that. Then this morning I found another dime.
What I am getting at is that maybe your expectations play a part in determining the outcome. Maybe once you expect more you subconciously start to look for and notice more.
Let me know what you think about this theory.
Until Next Time... (I think I will expect to find quarters and see what happens)

Step 5 completed
Hi Everyone,
As you know from previous posts I am currently looking for work (I have been out of work since the end of December). It is going slow so I have gotten a bit frustrated and short tempered.
As I am now home in the morning I have been getting the kids out to school. Today my son was late, missed the bus, and was still taking his sweet American time about getting out the door. In my short tempered state of mind I yelled at him and pushed him along.
When we got to the school he was too late to walk in on his own. I had to go in with him to sign him in. I hate doing this as they ask you for a reason why the child is late. My son has been late a number of times recently and I am running out of things to tell them.
Anyway while walking back to the car I found a dime on the ground in the parking lot. Guess there was some value in my son being late afterall.
In keeping with the rules I added 8 cents to the stake to complete Step 5. The remaining 2 cents was added to the surplus.
To summarize:
Current Step: 6
Total Stake: $.16 Total Surplus: $.12
Amount required to complete step $.16

Step 4 Completed
Hi Everyone,
Yesterday while purchasing the Sunday paper at the local quick check, I found a dime on the floor by the ATM machine. In keeping with the rules I added one cent to the stake and the remaining 9 cents to the surplus.
I have noticed that people must drop change at ATM machines and by the self checkout lanes that most stores now have. This is where I keep finding the loose change.
Anyway I am on to Step 5.
To summarize:
Current Step: 5
Total Stake: $.08 Total Surplus: $.10
Amount required to complete step $.08

Step 4 - Update Number 2
Hi everyone,
Finally some additional progress on Step 4. I was starting to think I would never get further along on this step.
Anyway, I had to take my daughter to her ice skating lesson and when I got out of the car, I found a penny in the parking lot. This means I have one cent to go to complete Step 4.
This got me thinking about the fact that finding spare change on the ground is only going to get me so far. I have been thinking of some other ways to add to the stake and will begin discussing them in my next post.
Stay Tuned...

Current Step: 4

Delay
Hi everyone,
Sorry I have not added any new posts in a few days. There was a death in the family and I needed to take care of a few things. This caused me to put doubling on hold during that time.
Everything has been resolved and I am resuming my doubling efforts. I will be out and about today running errands and hopefully will find the amount needed to complete the current step.

Keep Your Head Down - Step 3 completed
Hi everyone,
If you recall from my previous posts I was trying to complete Step 3. I needed $.01 to do so. Yesterday, while at the local quick check, I spotted two pennnies on the floor near the checkout. I picked them up and thought to myself I have completed step 3 and begun step 4.
However a quick check of the rules showed me that I was wrong. Rule #4 states:
"If your current step results in more than doubling, you must spend the surplus on yourself.
Initially I thought this is stupid, it will just delay completing the next step. After I thought about it more I realized that this rule is to ensure that you don't become so consumed with making money that you forget to enjoy it, or that you miss out on other things.
As I can't think of anything to spend one cent on I will save this surplus money separately from my stake money.
So to summarize:
Current Step: 4
Total Stake: $.04 Total Surplus: $.01
Amount required to complete step $.04

Lessons Learned #1
Hi everyone,
I do not know whether or not the author of double your way to a million dollars intended for it to force you to learn certain lessons about money. I do know that in order to make it to a million there will definately be mistakes made and lessons learned. Therefore, I decided that as I go through this journey I will post lessons learned to this blog.
The first of these is that your attitude towards certain things will most likely need to change if you are to be successful. I noticed that it can be embarassing to pick up a penny when people are watching. So I think the first lesson is that you need to get over the fear of what other people think. This is your journey and you should do what you see fit to get to the end goal.
So with that in mind...WHO CARES WHAT ANYONE ELSE THINKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK now that I said it out loud I think I am over it.
Until Next Time...
PS - I will add a link to lessons learned posts in the side bar once I figure out how to do so.

New Doubling Friend
Hi All,
One of the cool things about having a blog is that you end up meeting people you would not have otherwise met. The other day I signed up for "doublers den", a forum for doublers. I posted a message and received a response from someone who has been doubling for a while. His name is Xinfinitum and you can check out his blog, "double to a million plan" here. Also check out doublers den here.
Well anyway, although I have been keeping my head down I have not found anymore loose change on the ground so I am still at Step 3. Maybe I will have better luck tomorrow.

Have You Been Indexed??
I realized that if I expect anyone to follow my blog they must be able to find it. Therefore, it will need to be indexed by the search engines. The most important of these is obviously Google.
So how can you figure out if you have been indexed by google?? You can go here type in the URL of your blog and check.
Anyway, I really should be getting off to the skating competition.

Keep Your Head Down - Step 2 completed
Hi,
I figured that in order to find the next penny I would have to keep my head down and look for it. This paid off today. I was in the local Quick Check picking up the Sunday paper and I found another penny on the floor (this completes Step 2).
On the way out of the store I found another penny on the ground in the parking lot so I am part way through Step 3.
To summarize:
Total $.03
Current Step 3
Amount needed to complete Step $.01
Anyway I am off to my daughter's ice skating competition. I will keep my head down and try to complete the current step.

Very First Message - Step 1 Completed
Hi,
This blog will document my attempt to make a million dollars, starting with nothing, by following the "How to double your way to a million in 28 Steps" program. You can google "double to a million" to find the exact plan. Once I figure out how, I will post a link to the plan.
This is part of a bigger project I am working on, which I am calling "OFF KILTER". I will post more about off kilter later.
Anyway, I attempted to do this once before but did not really follow through on it. About a week ago, I was thinking about doing it again when my son found $20 in a parking lot. Then last night my daughter found $20 in the bathroom while in the supermarket. I took this as a sign and started looking down on my way out of the store. What did I find one penny. Not as lucky as the kids I guess but that is step one completed.
I know this will sound like BS but as I am writing this post I got a phone call from my daughter. She just found another $20.
Anyway, step one (finding one penny) is complete. Step two is to double this amount. Hope you will start your own journey to a million. If you do please reply to one of my posts and let me know how you are doing. If you are already on a doubling mission of your own let me know that too!!!
Anyway Until Next Time...
